Turning Point (40 Days in the Word)

40 Days in the Word - Coming Soon!

In the summer of 2010 I experienced a genuine, bona fide turning point in my life. I read a book called Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. Right now, I can’t even recall why I read it, but it was an eye opening experience. I finished the book in two days time. The author compares the money management approach of his father and a friend’s father. He explains the difference between earned income and passive income. The ideas that he conveyed made a lot of sense. And it set up the biggest financial turning point of my life.

Can a simple thing like reading a book be a turning point in your life? Not unless you’ve never read before.  Reading a book isn’t a turning point but it can definitely create an opportunity for one. The ideas contained in Rich Dad, Poor Dad gave me an opportunity for genuine bona fide turning point in 2010.

I let the book be my coach and I went out and saved, scrimped, and sold my way to a down payment and bought a rental property.  Over the next four years I allowed Mr. Kiyosaki to coach me through that process seven more times.  Today Sarah and I own eight rental properties and our future financial picture has completely changed.

I knew working on a church salary with six children I’d never be able to save much for retirement.  I knew even with my part time job in the military I wouldn’t be able to save enough money to leave my children and this church any kind of inheritance, but that outlook has completely changed now.

After reading Rich Dad, Poor Dad, I see those eight rental properties as eight long term savings accounts that my renters deposit money into every month. In a few years when all those houses get paid off, I’ll be able to live off the income from those houses and I won’t need a salary from the church. And when I die, Sarah will have a steady source of income. And when she dies our children and this church will inherit some money from us. All because of that turning point eight years ago. My only regret is I wish I had read that book sooner.

Turning Point - a point at which a significant change occurs

Turning point opportunities don’t come along every day. In fact, they are rare. A genuine, bona fide chance to change the course of your life is scarce. If you attend Horizons Church, you’re about to encounter one. 40 Days In The Word starts in March and those seven weeks in March and April are ripe for a turning point. If you’ll embrace the moment and commit to cast off the business as usual mentality and truly engage you will be a different person in April.

What would your life look like if you had a vibrant robust connection with God?  I’m not talking about just coming to church on the weekend — I’m talking about a vibrant relationship with God.  How would you be different?  How would your family be different?  What about our church?  How would we be different?

Many of the problems we face day to day, week to week, are caused by a lack of connection to God.  We go to church on Sunday, but we live Monday through Saturday like functioning atheists: we’re not connected to God, there’s no relationship with him. We go to church, but we remain spiritually immature because the only time we think about God is the 70 minutes we’re in church. Our spiritual immaturity gets us into all kinds of trouble because we make bad decisions. What if that changed?

“Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ” (Ephesians 4:14-15 ).

I want to be that guy!

"I will run in the path of your commands for you have set my heart free" (Psalm 119:32).

I want to be that guy!

“But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint” (Isaiah 40:31).

I want to be that guy!  And in the deepest, truest part of your soul, you want to be that person too!  Get ready, 40 Days in the Word is coming soon to Horizons!
